How to Make Homemade Cat Treats

Homecooked Treats for Cats

Let’s face it—cats like home cooked food too!

If your cat has been itching for some tasty cat treats but you don’t have any, or perhaps you just went shopping and forgot to pick them up, see if you have the ingredients in any of these recipes handy in your pantry.

Get ready to make some of the best treats that are easy to make, don’t cost a lot, and don’t take a lot of time. The best part is, you’ll know the ingredients that you’re putting into your cat’s belly when giving them homemade cat treats!

Chewy Delights

Ingredients

1 large egg

1/4 cup of chopped parsley

4 oz. of wet cat food (use your cat’s favourite!)

2 tbsp. of water

2 tsp. of olive oil

1 cup of brown rice flour

1/3 cup of cooked rice (white or brown)

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 ºF

Mix the cat food, egg, chopped parsley, water and olive oil in a medium bowl. Add the rice and flour and mix until well blended. Spread mixture on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, about 1/3 in. thickness. Bake 11 to 15 minutes on middle oven rack.

Remove from oven and let the pan cool for long enough to handle it. Cut the spread into pieces of desired shape, it will be soft and doughy. Bake for 7 or 8 more minutes.

Store in fridge in an airtight jar or container. Yields approximately 50 treats, depending on size.

Tuna Crunch

Ingredients

6 oz. can of tuna-do not strain

1 cup of flour

1 cup of cornmeal

1/3 cup of water

Preheat oven to 350 ºF. Hand-mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl. Roll dough into 1/3 in. to 1/4 in. thickness. Slice into bite-size pieces. Place on cookie sheet greased or lined with parchment paper. Bake until golden brown (about 20 minutes).

Kickin’ Chicken Bites

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups of shredded cooked chicken

1 cup of whole wheat flour

1/2 cup of chicken broth

1/3 cup of cornmeal

1 tbsp. of softened margarine

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 ºF. Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl to make the dough (add water a teaspoon at a time if needed). Knead dough into ball and roll out to 1/3 to 1/4 thickness. Cut into bite-size pieces (square inch works nicely). Bake for 25 minutes on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

Fishcuits

Ingredients

7 oz. of sardines in oil, do not strain

1/2 cup of wheat germ

1/4 cup of powdered milk

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 ºF. Mash ingredients together in a bowl. Roll fish dough into small balls. Place balls on greased cookie sheet and flatten with fork. Bake the fishcuits until they begin to brown. Makes about 24 treats!

Catnip’s Meow

Ingredients:

1/2 lb. of ground turkey

1 tsp. of dried catnip

1 small carrot, finely grated

1 tbsp. of grated cheese

1/2 cup of whole wheat bread crumbs

1 tsp. of brewer’s yeast

1 egg, beaten

1 tbsp. of tomato paste

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 ºF. Combine the turkey, catnip, grated carrot, grated cheese, bread crumbs and yeast in a medium bowl. Mix in the egg and tomato paste. Roll into small balls and place them on a greased cookie sheet. Bake until treats are firm and brown (about 15 minutes).

Additional Tips

Make large batches as you would with cookies and save them in an airtight jar in the fridge to keep them fresh longer.

Use organic ingredients whenever possible to make healthier treats.

Cats will eat tuna on anything.

Top treats with tuna, sardines or salmon for a gourmet treat!

Garlic can be toxic to cats in large amounts, but can be beneficial in small amounts, such as a small slice of a garlic clove a couple times a week. Use it sparingly.

Catnip can be added to nearly any treat; a little goes a long way.

If you have a finicky eater, you may need to try a few of these recipes to find the one your cat will love.
