🌼Things That I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started A Business(AMAZING INSIGHTS)
Making a company is a great way to improve the world while improving yourself. When you make a company, you make a utopia. It’s where you design your perfect world.
I like this quote by Derek Sivers
“ Making a company is a great way to improve the world while improving yourself. When you make a company, you make a utopia. It’s where you design your perfect world.”
Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?
We are free to create our world, not bound by rules, and live as we are. It’s worth a try… do you feel the same way?
And right here is the shared story of how Derek Sivers created his successful business?
I guarantee that his sharing will help us a lot better on the way forward.
1. How to start a business
Derek’s story told in his book Anything You Want, is one of the best examples of how to achieve success in life.
Solve your problem
The first step is to solve the problem yourself.
I am impressed by this way of thinking. Instead of thinking about the problem, solve it.
An example of this you can see in real life is that Elon Musk has practiced it many times.
Elon Musk went out to drink, forgot his cash, and was cursed => established the Paypal payment system
Elon Musk took his girlfriend out but his girlfriend didn’t like the smell of smoke from a gasoline car => created a Tesla electric car
Elon Musk is tired of having to get up early to not be late for work => there is also a Hyperloop technology bullet train
Elon Musk is angry because Los Angeles is often stuck in traffic => created The Boring Company, to dig a tunnel under the city quickly
Elon Musk has gossiped too much, was cursed “about your planet” => and built a commercial rocket SpaceX. Probably to go home for convenience
Elon Musk video chat with a Chinese girl but lags because of the firewall => launch a satellite to create a global Internet connection system — Starlink
Elon Musk had to learn too much difficult knowledge => and created Neuralink to implant a chip in the human brain, when needed, he can download knowledge about the brain.
Did you see something wonderful happen? These ideas are not far away, it in solving our problems.
Share your solution
After solving my problems. But there are a lot of people out there just like you, they have the same problem as you, share it and you can start a business based on that solution.
If it’s not a hit, switch
Indeed, there is still a risk here. Life is not rosy simply with the above 2 steps. There is a solution to the problem. But it’s important if the problem isn’t big enough, it’s not special, and people don’t use your product a lot. You need to change.
“Don’t waste your time persistently doing what’s not working.” _ Derek
2. How to grow your business
Focus on a utopian customer experience (from the customer’s point of view)
When we need to expand our business, we need to pay special attention to the customer experience.
There is a concept we can apply at this moment to create “The Magical moment”.
“The Magic moment” (also known as “the Aha moment”, or “the Wow moment”). It is the moment when customers realize that your product brings value to their needs, for the first time. First, use the product.
You can imagine the process of using a new user’s product as follows: They come across your product on a certain media channel → Curious to go to the website/fan page to find out information → Try to create an account/download the app About trial → Take steps to onboard, tinker with use, and …
“Wow this is great!”, they found the product met their needs.
That is “the Magic moment”, the moment when you have a new active user.
Inject moments of unexpected generosity
Sometimes you also need to create surprises to make a good impression on customers.
“It’s counterintuitive, but the way to grow your business is to focus entirely on your existing customers. Just thrill them, and they’ll tell everyone.” — Derek Siver
Delegate or Die…
This comes as Derek’s company is growing and has a lot of work to do. When everyone in the company has a problem or needs confirmation, they must contact Derek. But Derek was busy at that time, so he authorized it like this.
When asked a question about an operational decision, complete the following steps:
1. Gather everyone together
2. Explain your philosophy (why you would do what you would do)
3. Ensure that everyone understands (simulate an example and ask questions)
4. Get one person to write down the philosophy in the company manual
5. Let everyone know that they can make the decision next time without having to ask you for permission
With this approach, Derek has reduced a lot of workloads. At the same time, it is this authorization and trust for other levels. It helps the company to have more creative ideas to solve problems but still by the will and spirit and ethics suitable for the company.

3. When to Sell a Business
If these two situations happen, sell your business.
If selling your business is what’s best for the customer
If staying in the business is stunting your personal growth
I hope you enjoyed reading this article. I hope it is not too long and boring. You do not need to read the book “ Anything you want” if you are in a hurry and have to work. But if you choose to read it, I think you will find what you need and maybe there is value in this article.
There are several main ideas I learned from the book “Anything You Want” by Derek Sivers that have greatly influenced my mindset on starting a business. The ideas expressed in the book will help anyone interested in starting a business, or if you just want to see if you have any problems that need to be solved.
Right now, if you have a problem that needs solving, try to solve it and share your solution with everyone!
